August 16, 2011
Dear Valley View families,
I trust that all of you are enjoying the time off and the wonderful weather we’ve been so fortunate to have this summer! Although the summer isn’t quite over yet, I wanted to pass along the following information regarding the new school year.
ð The first day of school is Wednesday, September 7. The school site council has approved the new school hours to be from 8:00 am to 2:24 pm. The warning bell will ring at 7:55 am and students will line up behind their room number on the playground.
ð Gates: Both the Woodrow Wilson and Oakcrest gates will be opened at 7:30 am each morning. Students may not arrive on campus before 7:30 am. The Oakcrest gate will be opened at 2:10 pm (1:10 pm for early dismissal Tuesdays) for parents to park and pick up their students upon dismissal.
ð Banked time Tuesdays: I have attached a schedule of the early dismissal Tuesdays for the 2011-2012 school year. On these Tuesdays, students will be released an hour early at 1:24 pm in order for the teachers to participate in professional development. Please note that there are 2 Tuesdays (November 22 & February 28) that are not early dismissals. We will be sure to send home reminders before these dates. 2011-2012 professional development days
ð Class rosters: The new class rosters will be posted on the playground on the first day of school along with the room number and the teacher.
ð Meal applications: The Food Services Branch will be mailing home the meal applications this year. Please fill out the application as soon as you receive it and mail it back to them.
ð New Parent Orientation: There will be an orientation for new families on Friday, August 26th at 8:00 am in the auditorium. Following the orientation, there will be an opportunity for new kindergarten families to meet with the kindergarten teachers to receive more information specific to the kindergarten program.
ð LA’s Best: If you’ve submitted an application for the LA’s Best program, you will be contacted next week regarding the status of the application.
As most of you are aware, the morning drop off and parking is still an ongoing concern at the school. Although it has improved greatly over the past couple of months, we are continuing to look at other ways to improve the traffic flow while ensuring the safety of the students. We ask for your patience and understanding especially during the first few weeks of school. Please keep in mind that parking may be very limited during this time. Please park only in the designated parking spaces; otherwise you may be interfering with the flow of traffic. Also, if you are parking outside in the neighborhood, please check to make sure you are not blocking any driveways of our neighbors.
In order to help facilitate the morning drop off, please remember the following procedures for dropping off students:
ð For the safety of the students, please do not let them exit the car until you reach the drop off zone.
ð The volunteers will open the car doors and help students exit the vehicle.
ð The students should be seated on the right side of the car with their belongings with them.
We are in need of volunteers for our safety valet program. If you are able to help on any of the mornings, please let me know.
If you have any questions, please call us at (323) 851-0020.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer vacation and look forward to seeing all of you on September 7!
Sincerely,
Susan Kim
Principal
