Great Big Book Fair
September 27, 2015
Valley View's annual Scholastic Book Fair was a monstrous success! We sold 2,380 books--equivalent to 428,220 minutes of reading--beating our goal by 35 percent! In recognition of this fantastic accomplishment, Ms. Kim will allow every student to blast her with water balloons at Fall Festival.
Our profit from the fair is $6500 in Scholastic Dollars, which will be used to bring new and noteworthy books into our school library and classrooms.
Thank you to everyone who shopped at the weird, wonderful Monster Book Fair. Your belief in the power of a good book (and a good gadget--hello, UV Spy Pen!) helped us break records this year.
Dozens of individuals gave of their time and creativity to make the fair such an unparalleled blockbuster, and we are grateful to each and every one of them. First and foremost, our beloved librarian, Ms. Cain, deserves a HUGE round of applause for sharing her time and expertise every single day. Thank you also to our teachers and Ms. Dee Dee, who worked with their classes to create many of the fair decorations--and a little extra love to Ms. Alvy and Ms. Hoeschen, who also volunteered behind the registers.
Thanks to all the parents who put their muscles to work moving furniture and loading in the fair, and to our little marketing team for making signs and flyers. Thank you to our intrepid sales crew, who stood firm in the face of long lines and rang up thousands of items. Thanks to our bakers and food bringers for catering a delicious Books & Breakfast event. And thanks to Melissa Hill, Kate Kelly and Loretta Rodriguez for keeping things running in multiple ways, on multiple days.
Well done, Panthers!
Heifer Read to Feed
May 18, 2015
Our little school raised $8,840 for the Heifer International Read to Feed Charity! The kids read for months, since February, collectively reading over 5,000 pages! Last week they celebrated with cookies, prizes and a big check given to Heifer International. All of the money raised will go to help Heifer's earthquake relief and recovery efforts in Nepal.
Thank you to Kathy and Matt Weiss for all of your work bringing this worthy cause to Valley View, and THANK YOU Valley View students for reading and raising money to help others around the world!
Comcast Cares Day
April 18, 2015
Over 300 volunteers from Comcast and NBCUniversal, along with their families and friends, came to Valley View to give the campus an amazing makeover! We were told there were wait lists to get signed up for our school!
Shanna Mendiola from NBCLA handed out Jamba Juice, and Pink's Hot Dogs was stationed on the campus to keep volunteers nourished. Minions paid a visit to the kiddie volunteers! NBCLA's Mekahlo Medina and Weatherman Anthony Yanez were there as well, and a DJ kept the event lively.
Monday morning, the children were ecstatic to find their campus transformed- new hopscotch squares, basketball and handball courts, four squares, running track, beautiful fences that reiterate our school motto, "The School with Heart, in the Heart of the Hills"! The Kinder yard was adorned with colorful leaf patterns and adorable ladybugs. As if it couldn't get better, NBCUniversal presented Valley View with a $15,000 check to go towards our master campus improvement plan!
The families and staff at Valley View extend our deepest gratitude to Comcast, NBCUniversal and all the volunteers who helped make Valley View the beautiful, fun campus our kids deserve!
